Kidney Awareness Month & Int’l Women’s Day

I know … Kidney Awareness Month and International Woman’s Day … two seemingly unrelated events, eh. However my sweet Dad, Ken Merkley, has managed to pull the two of them together in a heart warming article carried by The Vancouver Sun today. (thanks to my Vancouver based clients, friends and colleagues who have been emailing me about seeing it … nice of you to be in contact about it).

I’ve written on the blog before about our connection to kidney health / disease awareness – given Dad received his second kidney transplant in 2000 (that one from me).

Its an important issue that unfortunately effects many, many people — due to the current way kidney disease and transplantion is handled in our North American culture.

While my role is just something I think most daughters would willingly do if they were met with the same circumstances, it is great to see mention being given to the many female health care practitioners, advocates and patients who are doing their part to SHIFT the way kidney disease and transplantion is managed.

Here’s to these fantastic women being given some public accolades and thanks! And here’s hoping that the challenges surrounding this issue get softened and worked out in the months, years and decades ahead of us. Both in North America and throughout the world!
