The History of My Magic Marker Events:

clip-moreretreatsI’ve been teaching visual process skills since the 90s – both in the United States (I spent a decade in San Francisco, the mecca for Graphic Facilitation) and in my home country of Canada (I returned to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia in 2002). In the early years, I focused my efforts on teaching the elementary skills needed to work visually – cause hardly anybody was doing this work back then! However, as my volume of students grew, and the field overall blossomed, the need for advanced training and community organically occurred.

To meet this need, I’ve organized various incarnations of advanced support over the years, most under the Magic Marker banner. And most in longer-term masterminds spanning multiple months. These masterminds included online huddles and in-person retreats. While the online component was an important part of the bonding, the in-person retreats were the huge, hands down favorites every time. So much so that “More Retreats Please” became the mantra.

Sooooooo, this season I’m doing something different. Instead of a longer-term mastermind, I’m offering just the juicy 2-Day In-Person Retreats … plus some Private Coaching with me at a special rate (for those who desire even more individualized attention). Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE supporting beginners, however I REALLY LOVE supporting folks who have the basics and are going for higher, more complex manifestations now. To really integrate the visual way of working into your practice and bust through any self-imposed limiting beliefs, negativity and other resistance … so you stand in the JOY of having a thriving, fun and successful practice. Now THAT really inspires me! That is a delicious sweet spot!

Who This Retreat Is For:

Visual Colleagues

Magic Marker Retreats are for Process Professionals who have already taken beginner level Interactive-Visuals instruction (through my Fundamentals of Working Visually course or through equivalent instruction elsewhere) … and are in the midst of integrating these skills to higher levels of proficiency and reward. While its not a mandated prerequisite, the Biz Essentials for Process Professionals is also good prep for this retreat.

As stated earlier, these Retreats are for Process Professionals across the spectrum of group and individual work, whether you are internal in an organization or independently employed – leaders, managers, consultants, facilitators, trainers, mediators, coaches, therapists, scribes/recorders, video illustrators, content experts who want to develop their own visual tools, etc. Any Process Professional committed to improving your visual skills is welcome to come … and attendance at multiple retreats is welcomed.

Visual process skills, and the business development skills needed to have a successful practice, can be intimidating to learn … because of the vulnerability of the medium. It takes chutzpah to stand at a wall (or scribe on a tablet that is projected) for all to see. And to work through your money, art or joy resistance. These are ever-evolving and developing skills in my opinion (I’ve been using visuals in my process work and all that comes with that for over two decades now and in some ways I still feel very humbled about what I am able to do!). So there is NO NEED to feel you have to have everything mastered or at a certain level before you come. You don’t. You can’t! Its the nature of this way of working. That is what my Magic Marker experiences are about – providing a safe, supportive and skilled environment in which to grow, no matter where you are on your journey.

Given the collaborative manner in which I facilitate my rooms … its important that you are comfortable with small group interaction and value being able to share, brainstorm, strategize, schmooze, socialize and take solace with fellow Visual Practitioners. And that you are a responsible person who takes ownership of your own experience (i.e. you contribute, speak up, ask for what you need and honor other’s points of view and experience). And are ok with emotions — its not unusual to have some appear in my events cause I’m kinda a catalyst for that sort of thing (a roto router for clearing our insecurities, fears, comparison-itis, scarcity issues, etc.). You also have a high degree of integrity and trustworthiness, respecting other people’s ideas, intellectual property and confidentiality.

In the past year I’ve been in two of Christina’s courses: Fundamentals of Working Visually and the Magic Marker Mastermind. I’m about to launch into her Biz Essentials for Process Professionals and expect that I’ll continue to study with Christina in the years to come because it’s been an invaluable investment of my time and money.

As a solo practitioner, I was looking for a thought partner to help me take my consultancy to the next level. Three partnerships later, enter Christina. She offered just what I needed through her visual skills training, advanced mastermind and private coaching.

Christina’s first class got me started. Her focus on process and exposure to the four ways of working visually helped me learn what I wanted to know and, most importantly, to distinguish myself in the marketplace. I integrate visuals in my facilitation work and provide sketchnoting for live events.

In Magic Marker Mastermind I further refined my style and honed in on the business questions I needed to explore. I see how Christina builds her business as she models the behaviors she teaches and shares valuable insider tips on how to work with visuals more effectively.

Christina has such useful breadth and depth. She’s comfortable in the roles of teacher, coach, mentor, and peer. Through her I’ve learned what it means to live with an abundant mindset as she’s graciously shares insights, processes and network. If you’re looking to take your business to the next level I highly suggest her curriculum. Christina helps you find your edge in the business world and take your enterprise where you dream it to go.

The MMM mastermind helped me put the pieces of the puzzle together and clarify the new path for my business. I took Christina’s online SHIFT-IT course, which solidified that I wanted to work in a visual way, and introduced me to the concept of “inner work.” Next, I took her Fundamentals of Working Visually and began to use all the new tools in my brand strategy practice. I was enjoying this work, but was feeling that there was another big leap forward for me.

The MMM provided some great “a-ha” moments for me. This mastermind really helped me craft the vision for my ideal career and life that I am now living. I also learned that I didn’t have to start from scratch; I could leverage and incorporate all of my valuable business experiences (corporate finance and equity research on Wall Street, an MBA, co-founder/entrepreneur at a start-up, branding and business strategist and my right-brain/left-brain mindset) into my new practice – where visuals support my strategic process.

Christina’s high-quality courses teach much more than how to develop a visual toolkit. She is very knowledgeable in Organizational Development, strategic visioning and planning processes all of which are key components of my practice. She has also successfully made the transition from the corporate world to running her own thriving business so she understands the journey and is very helpful to students who are on the same path.

I learned not only from Christina, but also from my fellow masterminders. Christina attracts very smart, accomplished and interesting people from diverse backgrounds to her courses and creates a wonderful container for them. They were, and continue to be, very generous with their time, knowledge and support. I was amazed at what everyone accomplished during the course and in our time together during the retreat – we blazed through an aggressive agenda in two days!

Thanks, Christina and fellow MMMers!

“I’ve worked with Christina for several years now, using her as my personal coach and then as my trainer for the Fundamentals of Working Visually. Working in a visual way has been a dream of mine for a while, and finding Christina’ and her support showed me that it is possible to learn these skills despite no artistic talent at all!

I was ready to incorporate the process into my work with women coping with loss and change in a bigger way this year and knew I needed some support in making it happen. I saw Christina’s notice about the Magic Marker Mastermind and knew it was meant for me.

Through the four months of interactive work and discussion, I received a major A-ha! for my business: I do my best work in an 11 x 17 tablet. I appreciate my mastermind partners’ support of me in clarifying my desire to do custom chart work and visual coaching in this way. It has changed how I approach my business and how I market my services to potential clients. And the results are more engaged clients (they love taking home their weekly map of next steps), a more unique positioning in the marketplace and an additional stand-alone income stream.

I loved being in this group with others of varying skill levels, fields and interests. Christina effectively created a welcoming space in which to share ideas, give friendly critiques and to visualize our next steps to success. Learning from a pioneer in the field has been an honor and I now know why so many individuals and businesses seek Christina out: she’s committed, professional, wise and wonderful. Our in-person retreat was truly magical and I have carried that energy and business focus with me ever since. Thanks Christina and fellow Masterminders!”

“The Magic Marker Mastermind was a wonderful space in which to set my visual goals, work on, and achieve them. The power and experience of this special group allowed me to create, reflect, and revise… and the mantra, “Pick Up the #!*”ing Marker” was exactly what I needed to step up to doing my own drawings.

The support and constructive feedback from Christina, and people I now call my friends, throughout our time together, was invaluable.

Just after the conclusion of MMM, at the annual conference of The International Forum of Visual Practitioners, I successfully launched my own suite of visual tools called Making the GRADE: Discovering the College That’s the Right Fit for You!- my visual system for helping teens in their college search process. I highly recommend Christina’s program, as it provides the structure, instruction, and space to find and continue to develop your own signature style.”

Format of Retreat:

Each Magic Marker Retreat is a unique, co-creative experience onto itself. We co-build each retreat according to the needs of participants at that point in time. Unlike my other courses (Fundamentals of Working Visually and Biz Essentials for Process Professionals) I do not construct and lead a structured curriculum … rather the curriculum emerges from the process of each participant and their unique visual journey.

The base of each Retreat is Visual Skills drills. We start out with Graphic Recording & Facilitation drills, to warm us up and start the enhancement process. I like to keep us up at-the-wall throughout both days, sprinkling these drills around the other segments we do.

The other segments?! Those come from the 7 practitioners at each retreat. You each have approximately 60 minutes to focus on the subject most pressing for you at that point in time. We design our agenda for the retreat at the very beginning of Day One. You share what you most want to focus on and hear what others most desire too. Together we craft a kick-ass, fantastic agenda, with plenty of at-the-wall drills in-between.  Each retreat is different, as you are each time you come!

I’ve been told that this co-created design experience alone is worth the price of admission for some (to witness how to spontaneously create an agenda and then execute it). I love the immediacy of working this way … cause we tweak things as we go along. Often questions get answered via someone else’s subject, so we follow the whispering wisdom of what NOW wants to emerge as the most juicy focus! Part of the ‘magic’ in Magic Marker.

Possible Topics:

Any interest, curiosity or struggle is fair game for a Magic Marker Retreat. To give you an idea of the possible range, here are a few of the many possible topics:

  • Drawing Practice and Icon Ideas (for specifics that come up in your practice and content area);
  • Formats and Structure Tips (how to work with that darn blank paper in interesting and unique ways);
  • Case Studies (bring in your agendas or client projects for assistance in mapping out a mural, template or other artifact — its a blast creating these materials as a group!);
  • Supportive Critiques and Feedback (bring in past work for feedback and improvement ideas);
  • Identity and Branding (how to effectively and smartly position yourself along the visual spectrum);
  • Revenue and Income Building (how to define and attract good, quality clients in abundance);
  • Fees and Contracting (what/how to charge depending on your geography and market);
  • Teaming and Partnering (how to collaboratively work with others);
  • Develop an Internal Practice or Visual Department Within an Organization (leadership sponsorship, integrating within existing processes and structures, developing appropriate visual tools and aids);
  • Unsupportive Colleagues, Supervisors or Family Members (how to win them over).
  • Development of Signature Style and Look;
  • Creating Custom Signature Systems (visual tools based on your own intellectual property, like what I did with my SHIFT-IT Visual Coaching System and Visual Coach Certification);
  • Visual Bios and other Visual Marketing Tools;
  • Effective Use of Metaphor (in custom charts and recordings);
  • Explainer / Whiteboard Videos (like the popular RSA Animate’ videos);
  • Report Reproduction;
  • Marketing (particularly social media, website and internet marketing techniques;
  • Setting Expectations and Proper Client Boundaries (live work looks different that studio work!);
  • Digital Technology (use of web conferencing, tablets and other technological advancements;
  • Inner alignment issues ( identify and deal with the inner crap that keeps you limited);
  • Visioning and Action Planning (what’s next and your plan to manifest it).

A Vibrant Cohort of Visual Colleagues (cohort 2013)

Francesca de Bastiani Facilitator, Trainer & Curriculum Developer“Are you a visual person? Do you like to work with images that evoke thoughts, emotions and concepts? Do you enjoy using colour, simple lines and succinct vocabulary to tell a story? Do you enjoy discovering with like-minded individuals?

Do you like being mentored by an exciting individual who has a keen ability to “get you” quickly and coach you to develop a clear action plan with meaningful, concrete activity to move you closer to your goals?

When I signed up for Christina Merkley’s Magic Marker Mastermind (MMM), I wasn’t sure what to expect. However I knew that after experiencing her “Fundamentals of Working Visually” I wanted more! And MORE I got …

I recommend MMM to anyone inclined to explore a fun and direct craft for getting messages across for work, personal life or continuous learning. Be ready to work large, Large, LARGE! The experience is very liberating in an extremely safe environment. I am in no way an artist but I love learning about capturing ideas and perspective quickly in a visual manner. I had the pleasure of learning with individuals who I would consider to be artists and excellent conceptual planners but felt that my participation was just as valuable. The experience for me was one of honouring my capacity to learn the craft at my own pace. Sure there were people that were better and more driven to produce. I never once felt that I had to keep up, rather, was coached to be where I was at and this made the experience very rich and enjoyable.

MMM is of particular use to someone, like me, who is in a position of facilitation, process planning, recorder of meetings, instruction and lesson planning. Was invaluable and the visual way of working has become a very important part of my life. I encourage you to dive in and embrace The Magic Marker Mastermind. You will learn a lot, enjoy what you are learning and be able to help others along the way too. Christina Merkley makes sure of that!”

“I’ve taken every program Christina has ever offered I think! Including Visual Coach Certification, a previous 6-month Accelerator and this MMM one, plus her very useful base skills trainings.

I come back again and again because of the quality of her offerings, her Organizational Development and Change Management knowledge and her program’s relevance to me as a senior Process Professional.

In the Magic Marker Mastermind I liked the review of the basics without going back to square one, including formatting, lettering and colors. The weekly webinars worked well especially having video and audio recordings (for those times when I could not attend live). Given the environments I’m often working in, the ideas for incorporating visuals into powerpoint was very helpful as was tutorial on template development and how to use landscapes for variety in graphic recording. I’m getting wonderful response to my visual work in my organization (and with our many clients) and was great to have a good group of visual colleagues to share my kudos with. Loved participating with this solid group of Visual Practitioners and listening to their ideas and plans too!”

“I was first exposed to working visually in 2010 when I began to cast about for more interesting ways to engage leaders in the wide variety of offsites that I lead. After reading a number of books and applying general concepts, I knew that I would benefit from some more structured “hands on” learning. Enter Christina Merkley. I started with her beginning course and was hooked!

Fundamentals of Working Visually was an incredibly rich learning experience. Christina’s intellectual generosity is unparalleled. She not only skillfully taught the basics but also shared tips and tricks to accelerate my learning. Critical for me as I am not a natural artist! There had been icons that I had consistently struggled with and one particular session broke my logjam. My facilitation clients have proactively commented on the power of my visuals to focus and enable their conversations that matter

Magic Marker Mastermind was my next opportunity to further stretch. While the calls were a great way to get feedback and to share insights, I found the real-time, ‘at the wall’ retreats invaluable for application and experimentation. A fertile environment for breakthroughs of which I had many!

Emboldened by success with facilitation clients, I decided to pursue using visuals with my coaching clients. While I often found myself drawing in sessions, Christina’s approach is more deliberate and intentional. I enrolled in Visual Coach Certification (which I’ll finish next month). The three coachees that I have taken through The SHIFT-IT Visual Coaching Process® were extremely positive about this inner work/outer work framework and the power of the visuals to spur deeper thinking.

I cannot speak highly enough about Christina and her programs. She is truly a pleasure to work with. She lives what she teaches and coaches. Her openness, generosity of spirit, creativity and resourcefulness are a pleasure to experience and a model to emulate. I highly recommend her courses and can virtually guarantee that you will not be able to stop at just one!”

“Fast, fast, fast … that is the nature of my entry into shepherding an internal visual practice in our busy consulting firm. After taking Christina’s Fundamentals of Working Visually, I was launched full speed into a fascinating opportunity to bring the visual way of working to our agency. I jumped at the chance to claim one of the Magic Marker Mastermind seats so I had ready access to a skilled Interactive-Visuals mentor and colleagues who could support and assist me as I dove headlong into this intriguing challenge. In a few whirlwind months our internal visual practice has received C-suite championing to create and implement a full suite of visual applications that suit our broad range of consulting environments. Education is key, both internally and with our external clients … about how working visually supports our engagements and allows us to operate at a sophisticated level of collaboration and transparency … literally getting us all onto the same page and moving effectively together. Key for the fast pace and high stakes of our projects.

MMM was a safe haven of visual colleagues who go what I was doing and were there for me and me for them … professionally and personally. I recommend it highly if you too need support from other visual folks who get it.”

Process Professional

Since you most likely have taken my Fundamentals of Working Visually, you will know me. However for those who don’t (cause I do accept folks who have equivalent experience from elsewhere) here’s the scoop on my background and how I came to be a well respected mentor in this field …

With a Masters Degree in Organizational Development & Transformation (ODT), I began my consulting career in the San Francisco Bay area in the mid-90s, traveling extensively throughout North America and Europe (first as an employee of The Grove Consultants International (pioneering Group Graphics firm led by David Sibbet) … then via my own independent practice, Make Your Mark, LLC).

I honed my skills in organizational development, change management, strategic planning and visioning, scenarios, team performance and conflict resolution (all using visual methods) working for such notable clients as Hewlett-Packard, eBay, Stanford University, British Broadcast Corp (BBC), The Institute for the Future, The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, American Institute of CPAs, etc.

I experienced a quickening of my creative and spiritual path in the aftermath of the Sept. 11th tragedy (scheduled to be in New York that fated day but having a series of synchronistic events keep me away). Via that wake-up call I transitioned my work to include integration of the visual methodology with coaching and spirituality – returning to my lovely hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 2003 and creating SHIFT-IT Coach, Inc.

SHIFT-IT System®

As a pioneering ‘Visual Coach’, I facilitate powerful awakening in individuals, partners and conscious businesses and am an internationally known coach of coaches.

Inspirationally received, my SHIFT-IT System® (comprised of 17 visual coaching tools) helps individuals, couples and families discover and align with what they really want in work and life. Through private coaching, mastermind groups and my popular Certified Visual Coach® and Working Visually programs I guide Process Professionals from around the world on how to effectively use visual thinking methods with their own clientele.

A proponent of Law of Attraction and deep emotional and energetic work, my soul’s purpose is to assist a shift in consciousness on our planet via the individuals, groups and companies I help empower. Process Professionals change our world, so I fulfill my purpose by training and coaching the Process Professionals.

Having been through the process of forging a prosperous alternative path, I compassionately champion you in making your own SHIFT to a successful process lifestyle … by using Interactive-Visuals and other innovative methods in their most effective manner.

More Testimonials from Satisfied Clients

Christina has been my Coach and Mentor for several years and I have attended pretty much every program she has ever run. This is the second Mastermind group I have been a member of and as with all Christina’s programs and trainings it delivered huge value on multiple levels. As a developing Visual Practitioner MMM gave me a hotbed incubator environment to support developing and growing my visual skills, expand into new learning territories such as digital scribing and also benefit hugely from the rich mix of experience and knowledge of the other mastermind participants. As always Christina attracts high calibre, quality students from around the globe and this group was no exception.

Weekly group calls meant maintained and consistent coaching and support plus the ever important element of an in-person retreat gave all of us a super strong springboard from which to bounce from. For me this has resulted in an accelerated expansion of my visual skills as a recorder and enhanced my facilitation processes and also my confidence has soared. As a direct result of being part of MMM I have landed more graphic recording work, seen an increase in the number of referrals and repeat business for my practice and the personal 1-2-1 coaching I have received from Christina has significantly helped me hone and focus my business development and services offered. It is without doubt the most important investment in myself and my business development this year and I have already made back the investment price several times over through increased work I have received. If you want to expand your visual skills, develop your visual business offerings and be mentored by an industry pioneer you can learn from no better mentor than Christina.

“I have had the privilege in taking a number of training programs with Christina, who has been a pioneer in moving forward visual recording, visual facilitation and visual coaching as professions in Canada and internationally. I learned a great deal through the Fundamentals of Working Visually, and later through the Magic Marker Mastermind. I grew and honed my visual skills with Christina’s support and coaching. I particularly enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships developed. Nothing beats the in-person MMM retreat where we shared ideas, drew madly in our graphic jams for difficult concepts, learned from each other and explored emerging tools and techniques.

Christina has shared her experiences and know how in the worlds of graphic recording, facilitation and coaching, which supported my vision of growing the visual side of my business that continues to manifest itself. It is an honor to have learned from one of the best. I can’t help but smile when I spend hours doing what I love. Thank you, Christina.”

“A year after taking Christina’s Fundamentals of Working Visually I followed up with her Magic Marker Mastermind — to take my visual practice to the next level. The Visual Practitioners in this group were amazing! I loved the opportunity to connect with colleagues and learn about the many unique ways of working with visuals. Our private Ning Forum was a great way to share work, materials and get feedback.

The MMM provided the motivation and inspiration to get seriously focused on my own visual practice helping me attract, contract and land custom chart work, graphic recording and time-lapse video gigs, and hone my own signature sessions with entrepreneurs and small biz owners. This program gave me the focus, tools, support and resources to move my visual practice to the next level of success.”
